Make It Click: Safe Thanksgiving Travel

Thanksgiving is a time for connection, celebration, and — for millions — travel. As one of the busiest road travel weekends of the year, it's crucial to prioritize safety whether you're heading across town or across the country.

In 2023, 309 lives were lost in traffic crashes over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. Shockingly, 44% of those victims were not wearing seat belts.

That’s why this year; we’re urging everyone to Make It Click — because seat belts save lives.

Safety Tips for Thanksgiving Travelers

1. Make It Click — Buckle Up Every Time

Whether it’s a quick trip to the store or a cross-state journey, buckling up should be automatic. Make it a non-negotiable rule for yourself and every passenger.

2. Secure Children Properly

Ensure children are in the correct car seat or booster for their age and size. Double-check that the seat is properly installed and that straps are snug and secure.

3. Use Seat Belts the Right Way

Adults should wear the lap belt across the hips (not the stomach) and the shoulder belt across the chest (not the neck). Never tuck the shoulder belt behind your back or under your arm.

4. Designate a Sober Driver

If you plan to drink at holiday gatherings, arrange for a sober ride ahead of time — whether it’s a designated driver, taxi, or rideshare.

5. Avoid Peak Travel Times

Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons are the worst times to drive. Thanksgiving Day tends to be clearer, and for Sunday returns, early morning is best.

6. Drive Defensively and Stay Focused

Watch out for distracted or impaired drivers. Put your phone away and adjust your driving for weather conditions.

This Thanksgiving, make safety your priority. Make It Click — every seat, every time.
